About the app

How does an app that makes you pray before opening Instagram or TikTok work?

A prayer lock app uses your phone's built-in app-limiting tools to cover chosen apps, like Instagram or TikTok, with a prayer screen. Once you pray and confirm, the apps open again for a set time.

"Pray before you scroll" sounds simple, but a phone doesn't normally let one app stand between you and another. Prayer lock apps use permissions that iPhone and Android provide for exactly this kind of thing: screen-time limits and focus tools.

How does it work on iPhone?

Apple offers a Screen Time permission to apps that help people manage their phone use. When you allow it, you pick apps from Apple's own private list, and the prayer app can place a "shield" over them at the times you set. Tapping a shielded app shows a screen that sends you to pray.

Apple's design keeps your choices private. With Prayer Latch, the app never sees the names of your apps. It only receives anonymous tokens from Apple's picker, so it can lock them without knowing what they are.

How does it work on Android?

Android apps use the Accessibility service to notice which app has just opened. When it's one you chose to lock, the prayer app shows its own screen over it. That also needs the "display over other apps" permission.

Accessibility is a powerful permission, so a trustworthy app should tell you exactly what it does with it. Prayer Latch explains this before asking, and only checks the name of the app that just opened. It doesn't read screen text, messages, what you type or passwords, and it never stops you from turning the service off or uninstalling.

What happens when I tap a locked app?

In Prayer Latch:

  1. Your chosen apps lock at your wake-up time each morning.
  2. Tapping one shows a prayer screen that brings you into Prayer Latch.
  3. You read a guided prayer, or pray in your own words with a 1, 3, 5 or 10 minute timer.
  4. You hold the Amen button. Your apps open and stay open until the next lock time.

So you pray once, and the rest of the day is yours. Some other apps instead ask for a prayer every single time you open a blocked app. Both approaches work. Prayer Latch is built around the morning, so your first conversation of the day is with God.

Can I get past the lock?

Yes, on purpose. Emergency unlock is always available and free, for 15 minutes up to 8 hours or the rest of the day. A prayer lock is a habit tool, not a cage. It works by adding a moment of choice, and it should never trap you away from a call you need to make. See What if I need a locked app in an emergency?.

Does it really change anything?

Small obstacles change habits more than willpower does. When the easiest thing in the morning is to pray for a minute instead of opening the feed, most people pray. Prayer Latch adds a companion, Latch, who grows on a 90-day journey as you keep going, which makes the habit something to look forward to.
