Locking and blocking apps

How to block TikTok (and why it's so hard to quit)

To block TikTok, you can turn on TikTok's own daily limit (Profile → Menu → Settings and privacy → Time and well-being → Screen time), set a Screen Time limit on iPhone or an app timer on Android, or use an app blocker that locks TikTok at set times. For the strongest block, delete the app and ask someone else to set a Screen Time passcode.

Steps below are from TikTok's, Apple's and Google's help pages as of October 2026. Menus vary a little between phones and app versions.

Why is TikTok so hard to stop?

Its For You feed learns quickly what holds your attention, and every swipe might bring something better. Videos are short, so there's never a natural stopping point. That isn't a character flaw on your part: the app is designed to be easy to start and hard to stop. That's why blocks work better than willpower.

How do I set a time limit inside TikTok?

  1. Open your Profile, then tap the Menu (☰).
  2. Tap Settings and privacy → Time and well-being → Screen time.
  3. Turn on Daily screen time and pick a limit.

When you reach it, TikTok asks for a passcode to keep watching. For accounts aged 13 to 17, a one-hour daily limit is on by default.

How do parents limit TikTok for a teen?

Use Family Pairing: in both accounts, go to Settings and privacy → Family Pairing and choose Parent or Teen. A parent can then set the teen's daily limit across devices, schedule time away, and mute notifications at night. By default, notifications are muted from 9 pm for ages 13–15 and from 10 pm for ages 16–17.

How do I block TikTok on iPhone?

Use Screen Time. In iOS 26, go to Settings → Screen Time → App Limits → Add Limit, pick TikTok under Social, and set a time. In iOS 27, use Settings → Screen Time → Time Allowances to limit Social Media. Set a Screen Time passcode that someone else chooses, or the limit will be easy to ignore. How do I block TikTok on Android?

Open Settings → Digital Wellbeing → App timers, tap Set timer next to TikTok and choose a time. When it runs out, TikTok closes and its icon dims until midnight. To block it during certain hours, add it to Focus mode. More options: how to lock apps on Android.

Should I just delete TikTok?

If you can, it's the most reliable option. Deleting the app (not your account) means you have to reinstall it to scroll, which is enough friction for many people. You can still watch a video someone sends in a browser. If you want to leave for good, TikTok lets you delete your account under Settings and privacy → Account → Deactivate or delete account.

Can I lock TikTok until I pray?

Yes. Prayer Latch locks TikTok, or any apps you choose, at your wake-up time and any other lock times you add. When you open it, you pray first, then hold to say Amen, and your apps open until the next lock time. It turns the first swipe of the day into the first prayer.

Is TikTok bad for Christians?

TikTok isn't sinful in itself, and plenty of good things are posted there. The question Paul asks is whether anything has mastery over you: "all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any" (1 Corinthians 6:12, KJV). If TikTok gets your first and last hours, it may be worth limiting. See is phone addiction a sin?

Do the same steps work for Instagram and YouTube?

Mostly, yes. Instagram has its own Daily limit and Sleep mode under Profile → Menu → Time management. Screen Time, Digital Wellbeing and app blockers like Prayer Latch work the same way for Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat and games.
