A good Christian family morning routine keeps phones out of bedrooms overnight, starts the day with a short prayer before screens, and uses simple shared rules that parents keep too. Teens are far more likely to follow a routine they see their parents living.
"And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up" (Deuteronomy 6:6–7, KJV). When thou risest up. The morning has always been a place for faith at home.
A simple routine
The night before
- All phones charge in one place outside the bedrooms, parents' included.
- Lay out tomorrow's Bible reading or prayer card.
Wake up
- Everyone gets ready before picking up a phone.
- Use a regular alarm clock for teens if the phone is their alarm.
Family prayer (3–5 minutes)
- One person reads a short verse.
- Each person names one thing they're thankful for and one thing they need prayer for.
- A parent closes in prayer, or take turns.
Then screens
- Phones come out after prayer and breakfast, not before.
How do we make it work with teens?
- Explain why. Talk about attention, rest and putting God first, not just rules.
- Model it. If parents scroll at breakfast, the rule won't last.
- Give them ownership. Let teens choose the verse or lead the prayer some days.
- Keep it short. Five minutes they'll show up for beats twenty they'll resent.
What about individual devices?
Teens with their own phones can set up their own morning habit. A prayer lock app like Prayer Latch locks the apps they choose, like social media and games, at their wake-up time, until they pray. It works best as a tool they choose for themselves rather than something imposed. It's a prayer habit tool, not a parental control, and they can always use emergency unlock.
What if mornings are chaos?
They often are. If a family prayer at breakfast isn't realistic, pray together in the car, at the door, or in the evening instead. The goal is a household where God is part of the ordinary day.
Pray before you scroll
Prayer Latch locks your chosen apps each morning until you pray. Your first 7 days are free, no card needed.
