Advent 2026 begins on Sunday, November 29, and runs through Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24. A phone-light Advent means setting aside some screen time during those four weeks, like social media in the mornings or phones at dinner, and using that time to wait for Christ with Scripture, prayer, an Advent wreath and time together as a family. A prayer lock app like Prayer Latch can help keep mornings quiet.
Advent means "coming." It's the four weeks before Christmas when the church remembers Israel's long wait for the Messiah and looks forward to Christ's return. It's meant to be a quiet, expectant season, which is hard to find in a December full of notifications, shopping deals and group chats. This plan helps your family make room, and Prayer Latch, a Christian app blocker that locks your apps each morning until you pray, can keep the mornings quiet. Scripture quotations are from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.
"The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined." Isaiah 9:2
When is Advent in 2026?
| Date | |
|---|---|
| First Sunday of Advent | Sunday, November 29, 2026 |
| Second Sunday of Advent | Sunday, December 6, 2026 |
| Third Sunday of Advent | Sunday, December 13, 2026 |
| Fourth Sunday of Advent | Sunday, December 20, 2026 |
| Christmas Eve | Thursday, December 24, 2026 |
| Christmas Day | Friday, December 25, 2026 |
These are the dates for Western churches (Catholic and most Protestant). Orthodox Christians keep the Nativity Fast instead, a 40-day season that begins on November 15 (or November 28 in churches on the old Julian calendar, which celebrate Christmas on January 7).
What is a phone-light Advent?
Not a total phone fast. It's choosing one or two places where screens usually crowd out waiting, and giving those back to God for four weeks. A few common choices:
- No social media until after morning prayer.
- No phones at dinner, with a candle lit on the Advent wreath instead.
- One screen-free evening a week for the whole family.
- No online shopping after 9 pm.
- Christmas music and Scripture in the car instead of podcasts.
What should we read each week of Advent?
| Week | Theme | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (Nov 29) | Hope | Isaiah 9:2–7 |
| 2 (Dec 6) | Peace | Isaiah 40:1–11 |
| 3 (Dec 13) | Joy | Luke 1:39–56 |
| 4 (Dec 20) | Love | Luke 1:26–38 and Matthew 1:18–25 |
| Christmas Eve | Christ | Luke 2:1–20 |
Many families read one short passage each evening when they light the wreath. The traditional themes and candle colours vary by church; hope, peace, joy and love are among the most common.
What can families do instead of screens in Advent?
- Light the Advent wreath at dinner and read the week's passage.
- Build a Jesse Tree, adding one ornament a day for a story from Creation to Christ.
- Bake for a neighbour or deliver cards together.
- Choose a family to give gifts to anonymously.
- Walk around the neighbourhood looking at lights, phones in pockets.
- Sing one carol together each night and learn all its verses.
- Write a Christmas card to someone who's alone this year.
Prayer Latch tip: for a phones-down Advent dinner, add a second lock time in Prayer Latch for when the family sits down to eat. Social media and games lock, and opening them means saying a short prayer first, a good moment to pray the week's Advent prayer below.
A prayer for each Sunday of Advent
Hope: Lord, the world feels dark sometimes. Teach us to hope in you, the light that came and is coming again. Amen.
Peace: Prince of Peace, quiet our hearts and our homes this week. Help us make room for you. Amen.
Joy: Father, give us the joy Mary sang about, joy that doesn't depend on how December goes. Amen.
Love: Jesus, you came because God so loved the world. Help us love the people in front of us, phones down and hearts open. Amen.
Isn't Advent supposed to be a fast?
Historically, yes. Advent began as a season of penitence and fasting, a little like a shorter Lent, and many churches still treat it as a time of quiet preparation before the feast of Christmas. Putting down some screen time is a modern way to keep that spirit. "My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning" (Psalm 130:6, KJV). For a full plan, see how to do a digital fast for Lent or Advent.
How can I keep my phone from taking over Advent mornings?
Start each Advent morning with the Lord, not the feed. Prayer Latch locks the apps you choose at your wake-up time, and you can add an evening lock time for family dinner. When you reach for a locked app, you pray first, with a guided prayer or the week's Advent prayer in your own words, and hold to say Amen. Your first 7 days are free, which covers the first week of Advent.
Pray before you scroll
Prayer Latch locks your chosen apps each morning until you pray. Your first 7 days are free, no card needed.
