Prayers and Bible verses

A prayer for focus, concentration and self-discipline

Here's a short prayer for focus: "Lord, my mind is scattered. Quiet the noise, gather my thoughts and help me give my full attention to the work in front of me, as if I were doing it for you. Amen."

Distraction isn't new. The Psalms ask God to turn our eyes from worthless things, and Paul told the Colossians to work "heartily, as to the Lord." These prayers are short enough to pray at your desk. All Scripture quotations are from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.

A prayer for focus

Lord, my mind is scattered and pulled in a dozen directions.
Quiet the noise. Gather my thoughts.
Help me give my full attention to the work in front of me,
and to do it as if I were doing it for you.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

A prayer for concentration while studying

Father, open my mind as I study.
Help me understand what I read and remember what matters.
When I want to give up or reach for my phone, give me patience to keep going.
Let what I learn be used for good. Amen.

Thomas Aquinas wrote a well-known prayer before study that asks God for a keen mind, a good memory and skill in learning. It's worth praying before an exam.

A prayer for focus at work

Lord, bless the work of my hands today.
Help me start the hard task first instead of hiding in small ones.
Keep me honest, steady and kind to the people I work with.
I offer this work to you. Amen.

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." Colossians 3:23

A prayer when your phone keeps pulling you away

Jesus, I keep reaching for my phone without thinking.
Turn my eyes from what is worthless and toward what is good.
Give me the self-control to put it down,
and help me find in you what I'm looking for in the scroll. Amen.

"Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way." Psalm 119:37

A prayer for self-discipline

Holy Spirit, grow your fruit in me, including self-control.
I can't make myself disciplined by trying harder alone.
Help me keep small promises today, one at a time. Amen.

The fruit of the Spirit includes temperance, an old word for self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). For more, see Bible verses about self-control and discipline.

Bible verses about focus

"Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established." Proverbs 4:25–26

"Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith." Hebrews 12:1–2

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." Isaiah 26:3

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2 Timothy 1:7

Why can't I focus when I pray?

Almost everyone's mind wanders in prayer. When it does, don't scold yourself. Notice where it went, and bring it back, or pray about whatever your mind went to. Praying out loud, writing your prayer down or praying a psalm word for word all help keep your attention.

How can I protect my focus from my phone?

Prayer helps, and so does removing the temptation. Put your phone in another room for an hour of deep work, or lock the apps that pull you away. Prayer Latch locks the apps you choose at set times, such as your wake-up time or the start of your workday, until you pray. It's a small pause that turns a reflex back into a choice.

Pray before you scroll

Prayer Latch locks your chosen apps each morning until you pray. Your first 7 days are free, no card needed.
