Building the prayer habit

What age should a Christian kid get a phone?

There's no Bible verse that sets an age, but many Christian parents now wait until about 14, the end of 8th grade or the start of high school, for a smartphone, and until 16 for social media. Before then, a basic phone or watch for calls and texts covers safety. Whatever the age, give the first phone with clear rules, parental controls and phones out of bedrooms at night. Prayer Latch, a prayer lock app, can add a morning prayer.

Few decisions feel bigger to parents today than the first smartphone. Scripture doesn't name an age, but it gives plenty of wisdom about guarding the heart, training children and choosing what we set before our eyes. Facts about pledges and laws are as of October 2026. When the first phone does arrive, a few tools help, from Screen Time and Family Link to Prayer Latch, a prayer lock app that keeps chosen apps closed each morning until your teen prays. Scripture quotations are from the King James Version, which is in the public domain.

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Proverbs 4:23

Wait Until 8th pledge Not before the end of 8th grade (about 14) —
The Anxious Generation (Jonathan Haidt) Not before high school (about 14) Not before 16
US law (COPPA) — Apps need parental consent to collect data from children under 13

Wait Until 8th and Haidt's norms both allow a basic phone or smartwatch for calls and texts before then.

What is the Wait Until 8th pledge?

It's a promise parents make to wait until at least the end of 8th grade before giving their child a smartphone. The pledge only activates once 10 families from the same grade and school have signed, so your child isn't the only one without a phone. More than 155,000 parents have signed, according to the group's website.

What does the Bible say about kids and phones?

The Bible doesn't mention phones, but its principles apply directly:

How do I know my child is ready for a smartphone?

Readiness matters more than a birthday. Signs your child may be ready:

What rules should a first phone have?

Write them down together as a family phone agreement:

  1. Phones charge outside bedrooms at night. This is the single most recommended rule.
  2. No phones at meals or in church.
  3. Parents know the passcode and can look at the phone.
  4. Ask before downloading any app (use Ask to Buy or Family Link approvals).
  5. No social media until 16 (or the age you agree on).
  6. A daily time limit, using Screen Time or Family Link. See how to lock games on a phone.
  7. Prayer before the phone in the morning.
  8. Talk, don't hide: if they see something bad, they can tell you without losing the phone.

Prayer Latch tip: for rule 7, sit down with your teen and set up Prayer Latch together on their phone. Let them choose which apps lock and pick their own wake-up lock time, so the habit is theirs. It's a prayer pause with a free emergency unlock, not a hard parental control.

Are app stores checking children's ages now?

Increasingly, yes. In 2026, Texas began requiring app stores to verify users' ages and get parental consent for minors' downloads, while a court challenge continues. Utah's and Louisiana's similar laws take effect in 2027, and a California law starting January 1, 2027, requires phones to ask for a user's age range when an account is set up. These laws help, but they don't replace a parent's judgment.

Should a Christian kid's first phone have Christian apps?

Helpful apps can make the phone a tool for faith rather than only a distraction: a Bible app, a prayer app, and worship music. See the best Christian apps for teens.

How can my teen start the day with God instead of their phone?

Make prayer the gate to the apps. Prayer Latch locks the apps your teen chooses, like social media and games, at their wake-up time. To open them, they pray first, with a short guided prayer or their own words, then hold to say Amen. Latch, a friendly padlock companion, walks a 90-day journey with them as they pray. It works best when your teen sets it up willingly. It has a free emergency unlock, so pair it with Screen Time or Family Link for hard limits.
